This Bold, Colorful Home is Extra in All the Best Ways

“Callie loves color, drama, and something surprising and unique,” prefaces designer Bailey Austin Bird of Bailey Austin Design while describing her inspiration for the Oklahoma home her client shares with her husband and 2-year-old son. Think wild patterns, mixed metals, funky wallpaper, and all the colors of the rainbow: Seems like overkill, right?
Well, it turns out that isn’t the case at all. “There’s a way to combine color and pattern in a way that’s more elevated,” explains Bird, who also did the architecture in the house. She focused on the outdoor space as much as she did on the interiors, making sure that the natural light emphasized the different colors in the design. For instance, the dining room looks out over to the pool through the large windows, and the forest green curtains further highlight that connection to the outdoors.
"I think that was one way we could balance out the color and texture,” elaborates Bird. “By focusing on an indoor-outdoor feel, we could have areas that were wild and crazy, but the outdoor space takes away some of that focus."
